Not every student has the same journey, and Madeline Mitchell’s (12) story is unique.
Growing up, her Nana would play the classic song “I Am Woman” by Helen Reddy.
“My Nana would always sing the lyrics ‘I am woman, hear me roar!’” At first, she thought it was a bit silly, but during her junior year, the song became a source of strength for her.
“When things got really stressful, I would think of those same lyrics my Nana used to sing,” Mitchell said. “Whenever I felt overwhelmed and unsure about finishing my work, I realized that if I didn’t tackle my assignments, I would just worry about them until they were done. I really loved to procrastinate, but my anxiety didn’t let me get away with it.”
Since her freshman year, Mitchell’s view of success has changed a lot.
“At first, I thought success meant having a career I was passionate about and being able to support my future family. Now that I’m earning my own money, I see success as not stressing about finances and feeling secure about my money situation.”
A person who has had a big impact on Mitchell’s life is Mrs. McFadden. She has made a difference in the lives of many current and former students with her teaching style and her willingness to help anyone in need.
“The Child Development 1 & 2 classes helped me discover my passion for working with kids. Also, being part of the education practicum course this semester has given me a glimpse into what it’s like to be an educator on a daily basis,” Mitchell said.
In the end, she hopes to make a difference in her community by getting her teaching degree.
“I want to get my degree in teaching so I can advocate for all of my future students.”
Her desire to give her future students everything they might need during their school years shows just how dedicated she is, and that’s truly inspiring.
