For most high school athletes, they dream of playing their sport in college. That’s the case with junior Kentessa Lawson. She has committed to the University of South Carolina to play D1 volleyball.

“I’m really happy with my choice to go there,” Lawson says as she wears her USC shirt. Watching Lawson play on the court, it’s hard to believe that she has only been playing for two years. With hard work and constant practicing, she got recruited.

She plays for the Show Me Volleyball Academy as middle blocker. Her height of 6-foot-3 and her strengths of hitting and blocking make this the perfect position for her.

The influence of her sister also encouraged Lawson to try it. Her older sister played in high school so she decided to try it and ended up falling in love with the sport. The support from her coaches, family and friends have made her volleyball journey successful.

“Because of them, none of this would be possible,” Lawson said.

Although many schools were interested, she felt like USC was her home.

“I love the family atmosphere. Dottie and Shonda, my coaches, were so welcoming on my visit. They were kind of like moms to me. They’re improving so much and I can’t wait to be a Gamecock.”

Lawson plans to attend the university in 2019.
