They had a lot of great matches but several matches particularly stood out. A few of these matches were from the number 1, 2, and 3 doubles. These six players did excellent and won their matches, helping the team out and scoring key points for the overall team score.
“Winning the top three doubles gives the team a boost towards team score and gets the momentum rolling into top 1-6 singles,” Coach Campos said.
This season started off a little slow while everyone was getting into the swing of things, but now it’s looking a lot better. At the beginning, they started off against some of their tougher opponents while also trying to get back into their rhythm. Now, however, the players are figuring out how everyone works with each other and finding their own unique playing styles.
With preseason practices being a lot of scrimmages against teammates shifting to going against other teams takes some getting used to. They have to figure out how their opponents play opposed to how their teammates that they’ve played many times in practice play which takes some adjusting. Now that they’ve been practicing for some time, they are figuring everything out much faster and just overall getting much better.
Due to a field trip, a few players weren’t present during this match, but the team was prepared and adapted. Tennis has a lot of moving pieces as it is, but when players are gone, more changes are thrown into the mix. The players are all trained to work with each other if there is a last minute switch where they have to play up or with another player.
Just last week the Eagles participated in the Show Me Tennis Tournament. There they reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket where they narrowly missed the win. According to Campos, “They fought all the way to the last game vs. a very good Marquette team.” With just one more win they would have made it to the championships.
