Have you ever thought about learning a new language? Think about all the challenges, but also all the advantages that come with learning a new language? Does it strike any curiosity?
Because for almost two decades, Liberty French teacher Rebecca Jennings has been educating students with the roots of the French language, and also the French culture.
Jennings’ French career firstly began in high school, when she decided to take four years of French. Yet when it came close to her graduation, she realized college wasn’t the best option for her.
“I didn’t really feel ready for college,” Jennings said.
This urged Jennings to explore beyond what was in front of her. And led her to going overseas to France becoming a foreign exchange student.
While in France, Jennings adored the culture as a whole. And learning French also came fairly easy to her, it was natural. She had to be, because she was attending in the 80s – things like social media and other cellular aspects didn’t really exist, and she couldn’t contact the French culture as easily.
While keeping in touch with her family was fairly challenging, she was also able to fully immerse herself within the language. Jennings also states that her social life in France was engaging.
“My overall favorite memory, of while being in France, was making friends. And being a part of a big class,” Jennings said.
Jennings also shared the biggest culture shock of while being in France.
“I was unaware how exhausting it could be to speak French, all day every day. The mental fatigue was huge,” Jennings said
Yet, despite it at once being draining, Jennings has fallen in love with French culture. And also fell in love with being able to share these experiences with other students as well.
Lorelei Wise (11) shared her favorite part about being in her Advanced French III class.
“When Madame Jennings teaches, she doesn’t just teach us about technicalities, but she teaches us the why through French culture,” Wise said.
To all of those looking to learn French or any other language, Jennings stated her advice.
“Practice, practice, practice. Integrate the language into your life. Watch movies in the language, Listen to music and podcasts in the language. Really make it a daily activity,” Jennings said
So have you ever thought about learning a new language? Hopefully the story of Madame Jennings helps you to take a leap and pursue that career.
