As the school year is wrapping up, students want to know: When is our last day?
Especially seniors, the dreaded final stretch they call it is what almost all seniors are feeling right now. And thankfully, the awaited hopeful announcement of WSD last day of school as just recently been announced on April 17 during the school board meeting.
The original release date was Tuesday, May 27 but was re-proposed to the board as Friday, May 23. While the proposed new date was May 23, it was unofficial as it was awaiting board approval at the April meeting.
Seniors will get out of school three days earlier in preparation for graduation and senior activities. This means that all seniors in the Wentzville School District will have their last day on Tuesday, May 20.
This date is shocking to some, but not all. Most students heard rumors about the new proposed date, but other were skeptical about the new date. Matthew Hansen (12) was one who was originally concerned about the new day but has now accepted the new change.
“I was worried at first, and I thought it was dumb,” Hansen said. “But at least I get a few days out earlier than everyone else.”
Many students and teachers find the new date May 23 as a relief. Other districts such as the Francis Howell weren’t as lucky. Schools around the area suffered this year from all of the snow days they encountered. And because of that, students from districts could have to stay in school all the way up until early June. Francis Howell has to stay in school until June 3, which means they get out almost two weeks after the WSD.
But because of the new introduction to AMI days, the WSD were able to give students an earlier last day rather than schools who were not utilizing the AMI days.
Many teachers also enjoyed the AMI days, and are glad to see the results from them, especially staff member Veronica Kirkpatrick.
“I have always liked the idea of AMI days but now this makes me like it even more,” Kirkpatrick said.
