Working at 15

My experience getting a work permit at 15

Lexi Donato, Reporter

When I turned 15, I was super excited to get my driving permit. I finally got the privilege to drive a car on the road. With this responsibility, I was not expecting I would get a work permit as well, only two months later.

Around the end of January and the beginning of February, I got a work permit from the counselor’s office. I had only recently applied for a job at Culver’s, and I knew I would need to get a work permit, to be allowed to work since I am only 15. I had to fill out the form and get a parent signature.

On Jan. 27, I got a call from Culver’s about an interview date. It was set a week later and I was thrilled. Once that week arrived I brought my work permit to the interview. The lady who gave me the interview was very nice. At first when I mentioned I was 15, she said that they don’t hire 15 year olds but would call her boss and ask if they could hire me and proceeded with the interview. She asked how long I could work and what days I was free. The work permit only allows me to work three hours on school days, and I needed Tuesday off since I have cheer practice those nights.

When I got home from the interview, it was only about an hour when the lady called back and told me I was hired. I was so happy. She also told me to come back the next day so I could get my shirts, hat, and papers filled out, including the work permit.

So by this time I had my part of the form filled, and the employer’s part filled. I only needed the school’s part. I had to wait till Monday to get the form filled out since I thought you had to fill it out at the school. Nope. It turned out, you had to go to the Wentzville School District administrative building. I had to rush since it was my first day and I didn’t want to be late. It was hard to find the office but I eventually found it and got it filled out.

My first day was good overall. I gave people their food and cleaned around a little. They taught me some stuff and overall it wasn’t too hard. They eventually taught how to work the register and how to do some chores before I leave.

Working I feel has made me more responsible. Since I work on weekends, I can’t hang out with my friends as much. I have to work around my work schedule. I also have to be reliable. Overall, I feel I’ve grown more mature and it gives me something more to do then just sit at home. I have learned a lot and it has been a good experience so far.
