AP Psych students have been tasked with an interesting project: Keep an egg from breaking for nine days. They have to carry it around with them everywhere, including to every class period. For many students, this project goes deeper than simply carrying around an egg. It symbolizes a new need for responsibility most have yet to experience.
Logan Hinds (12) has an interesting strategy when it comes to protecting his egg. “My strategy is to not make a protective case around it,” Hinds said.
Hinds feels a certain amount of responsibility to have the egg in possession at all times, however: “I feel like if I make a case for my egg I will be more lax or overconfident with it which will result in it breaking. If I am aware of its position at all times and how likely it is to break, it is less likely to break.”
The project definitely tests students’ ability to juggle “parenthood” and other general life responsibilities. For Hinds, finding the balance between caring for his egg and participating in his regular activities can be complicated.
“As I get more involved with my sport, which is coming into season soon, I think I am pretty responsible, but I can be forgetful at times and that has happened with my egg,” Hinds said.
Jack Downs (12) explains his personal strategy for protecting his egg.
“I put my guy in a plastic container with a cloth so that he would be comfy,” Downs said.
Downs details what he learned from this project. “I think it teaches you the importance of watching something more fragile. We might have kids one day and it takes responsibility to ensure they are loved and protected.”
One of the most interesting aspects of this project were the lessons students learned as a result of it. Students were almost given a trial run of adulthood, learning to find the most effective of way of raising and protecting their child while also managing to find a good balance between taking care of their child but also taking care of their other day projects, learning an important lesson about personal responsibility along the way.
