A few Project Lead the Way: Human Body Systems students, took a field trip to St. Charles Community College (SCC). They got to tour the campus and learn about the different healthcare programs at SCC. The professions they focused on during this field trip were occupational therapy, nursing, and pharmacy.
Students also got to hang out with a few mannequins. These mannequins behave like real-life patients would. The students were able to find a pulse and listen to a mannequin’s heart and lungs.
There was also a human relations lab. This lab includes placing fidgets and shaving cream out to ensure that the patients stay on task.
Madison Jimenez (10) enjoyed getting to learn about the pharmacy program.
“I like compound pharmacy, like making the medicines,” Jimenez said. “I liked seeing the [college] students interact with the mannequins and be very hands-on with their majors.”
Garrett Lant (10) also enjoyed working with the mannequins.
“I think it’s a really cool piece of equipment, and overall I think it would help the students a lot. It’s a very interesting program that they have on campus,” Lant said.
To end the day, the students got to spend time with some of the college students in the culinary program. The high schoolers got to sample a few of the chocolates the culinary students were working on.
Jack Albertson’s (9) favorite part was the food.
“[My favorite part] was probably the culinary arts area with all of the food, and all of the treats they gave us,” Albertson said.
