With the holiday season upon us, well, to quote Buddy the Elf, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
Last Friday, members of Select Treble Choir and Chamber Choir went on a day-long field trip dedicated to spreading Christmas cheer to various nursing homes around the area. With four total stops throughout the day, this is the first time LHS choirs have ever done a “caroling tour.”
“I think it went really well,” choir president Kailey Lawrence said. “I think everyone in the choir had fun, and the people we were singing for also really enjoyed it.”
On Friday, students showed up to school and as instructed, were wearing all sorts of holiday attire: reindeer ears, Santa hats, and winter sweaters. The first two hours of the day were dedicated to two things: Rehearsing the carols they would sing on the tour, and making holiday cards to give out to residents as the choirs visited the nursing homes. Every person in the choir was given one goal by Mr. Datz, the director: Give out the card and make a connection with someone in the nursing home.
“Going out and singing to our community is an important experience not only for us the singers, but the people we sing to. There are kids who go to nursing homes and sing, but with our group, we have taken a lot of time working together making sure that these carols sound good and have a mature sound that the people in those nursing homes get to enjoy,” Sage Kennedy (11), a member of Select Treble and Chamber Choir, said. “On a different note, we have no idea how many people actually go visit these people in these communities, and we have no idea which people in those rooms that meant the most to, and that is just so magical because there are likely a good few people who needed that.”
Bella Navarro-Sanchez (11), a member of Chamber Choir, also thought that the tour was very efficient.
“(I think) we all did a great job being flexible when we needed to change something or make quick decisions, and not only did the residents like it, we all enjoyed it and it got to spread love and happiness,” Navarro-Sanchez said.
