DECA recently excelled in the DECA Districts competition with 70 participants from Liberty, 37 who qualifying for the state competition in March that will take place in Kansas City.

DECA adviser Ms. Taylor explains what the student’s goal is during the DECA districts.

“The main goal of the DECA competition was to take everything they have been practicing for all year (whether a role play event or a paper event) and present the information to the judges in hopes that they score high enough to move on to the state competition. Many of them score high enough to  go to the state competition. Many of our students competed against 20-25 other competitors this year,” Taylor said.

Senior DECA member and first place winner in Apparel and Accessories Audrey Fleetwood speaks on how she prepared for the DECA Districts competition.

“I took a test prior to the competition day then did two roleplays, which are scenarios where I was given a role and had to solve a problem related to marketing apparel and merchandise,” Fleetwood said. “I then presented my solution as my assigned role to a judge. These role plays along with my test score were averaged to find my final score.”

Fleetwood explains how important DECA has been to developing important life skills.

“Being in DECA has caused me to step out of my comfort zone, improved my knowledge of marketing, given me real world experience working with businesses, helped me meet so many people, and given me the opportunity to grow my leadership skills,” she said.
