The 2023 VMAs held by MTV and hosted by Nicki Minaj took place on Sept. 12.

The VMAs (Video Music Awards) are one of the biggest events of the music world. A yearly award show where people get nominated for a variety of categories and one comes out victorious. It was created by MTV in 1984 and since then it has gained popularity.

This year the show was on Sept. 12 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. A variety of artists won this year but one truly came out on top. Taylor Swift, one of the biggest artists in the world, was nominated for 11 awards this year. Most of them were for her music video Anti-Hero. The others were for Artist of the Year, Show of the Summer, and Album of the Year for her 2022 album “Midnights.” She ended up winning 9 of the 11 awards she was nominated for making her the biggest winner of the night.

Swift was not the only person who won though. There were a bunch of other notable wins. Some of them include Jungkook and Latto for Song of the Summer with their song “Seven,” Olivia Rodrigo with Editing for her song “Vampire,” Ice Spice for New Artist, Dove Cameron for Video for Good with her song “Breakfast,” and more. The K-pop group Blackpink won two awards for Group and Choreography for their song “Pink Venom.”

The VMAs also had a number of performances. Some were more controversial than others. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion performed together to give the song “Bongos” its first live performance. Olivia Rodrigo shocked the audience with a reenactment of her new music video, “Vampire,” faking a stage malfunction ended up scaring some of the people attending who didn’t know this was going to happen. One of the more controversial numbers was Stray Kids’ performance of “S-Class.”

The VMAs seemed to have been a hit this year. Not many people seemed to have a problem with the outcome of the night, as people have in years passed. Many of the artists got their hard work and effort recognized and showcased for the world to see.
