Earth Club has been making a huge impact protecting our environment, both in and out of school hours. They have been working hard during football games, working rain or shine, even working into the early hours of the morning to make sure our school grounds are as clean as humanly possible.
Senior and Earth Club president Clara Walker and other members stayed after the first rainy football game game to clean up.
“I was so tired, and I was wet, and we were all a little bit miserable, but it was worth it in the end,” Walker said. “We definitely felt it, though.”
These members showed the dedication the Earth Club members have when it comes to recycling.
Walker also talks about the attitude some of the fans display towards recycling at the games.
“There is a group of people who will deliberately throw trash on the ground or just leave it in the stands. Some people just forget their trash is there, and some people really do throw away their trash and make our jobs easier,” Walker said. “It’s hard to see the disrespect not just towards us but our school and our planet.” Further showing why the recycling efforts are an important albeit under appreciated feature of the football games as a whole, one that is trying to keep our beloved stadium as clean as possible.
Walker hopes patrons of the games will get something out of seeing the recycling operation.
“I hope people will see the power that each individual can make from picking up trash. We can see the bags of trash that are picked up throughout the game that wouldn’t happen without each of us working,” Walker said.
Earth Club Sponsor Sandy Pizzo speaks on why these cleanups are an important part of the club’s activities.
“The Earth Club’s mission is to promote sustainability, climate awareness and a clean atmosphere,” Pizzo said. “We are doing this when we do our ‘clean up’ thus promoting a school free of trash and extra debris.”
