The death of Pope Francis has brought about a deep sense of loss in the Catholic world. To many, he was not just a religious leader but also a symbol of humility, compassion, and oneness.
Long-time Catholic Mrs. Bryan shared her remarks on the occasion.
“The pope to most Catholics is a very special man and symbol all rolled into one,” Bryan said. “He is the most personal link we have to Jesus on earth.”
Though she holds the papacy dearly, Mrs. Bryan noted the importance of personal reflection in matters of faith.
“I still employ my common sense and beliefs to make my own choices about how to live and treat others,” Bryan said.
Pope Francis’s passing was especially intimate for her.
“It was very difficult,” Bryan admitted, “but I was relieved that he could share one more Easter with us.”
She admired his commitment to simplicity, his ability to unify disparate factions, and his fondness for blessing the faithful — especially children.
For Mrs. Bryan, the connection to the papacy goes beyond history.
During the 1980s, her dad, a mechanic for TWA, was responsible for fixing up Pope John Paul II’s plane when he visited Chicago. “At that time,” she explained, “he had some rosary beads blessed by the Pope, and I have them. I treasure them very much.”
While Catholics around the world look to the Vatican, Mrs. Bryan will be keeping close tabs on the conclave.
“I just saw a movie about the conclave,” she grinned. “I will pray for our next pope to be one who will continue to unite us, love us, and lead us closer to God. It really doesn’t matter to me who it is. I just hope for a unifying pope.”
Each of the candidates brings with them a vision of the future of Catholicism — from radical change to conservative conservation.
Principal Ed Nelson believes that Pope Francis was regarded as one of the most progressive popes.
“Pope Francis was the most progressive pope,” Nelson said, who also mentioned that the decision for the new pope shouldn’t always be the popular opinion.
Whoever comes out onto the balcony to greet the faithful, Catholics like Mrs. Bryan are praying for someone who will further bring people together and reflect the loving spirit of Christ.
