Spring Sports Update: Soccer, Tennis, Baseball and Volleyball

How is spring sports going as the season nears the end?

How are some of our spring sports teams doing so far this season?

Girls’ Soccer 

Our varsity team has 9 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie this season.

The head coach is Heidi Kleekamp. The JV head coach is Abbie Bollwerk, with  JV assist as Alissa Albietz. The freshman coach is Thomas McDaniel.

Varsity soccer made it to the champions league finals, as they won their pool play for the tournament, then won the semi-final match to make it to the final match. They fell short in the title match, losing to Cor Jesu. The champions league showcased some of the best high schools in the St. Louis area.

“We graduated 10 seniors last year,” head coach Kleekamp said. “Our team has grown throughout the season both on and off the field. They have bonded well as a team with over half of the team being new this season.” 

Madelynn Moyers is the current leading goal scorer with 8 goals. Sophie Means and Mckenna Lucas are leading assists, with 6 goals for the season so far .

Varsity soccer player and defensive wingback Natalie Zeman (12) says, “ I think I have improved in many aspects, and I am hoping to accomplish making it past the first round in districts.” 

Kleekamp adds, “I hope that we are competitive with our postseason play. I hope that we show up big for the district game so that we have the greatest chance of advancing.” This is what Coach Kleekamp hopes for varsity soccer as we near the end of the season.

Boys’ Tennis

JV has 15 wins and 1 loss; Varsity has 6 wins and 1 loss.

The head coach is Teodoro Campos, the varsity assistant is Beau Hill.

JV tennis player James Coyle (12) has seen a lot of improvement from the team as the season progressed.

“I think that I have improved a lot since the beginning of the season because I have won some tough matches; when we started down.” Coyle hopes to finish strong in the last few matches.

Baseball

Freshman has 11 wins and 7 losses, JV has 5 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie, and varsity has 7 wins and 15 losses.

The head coach for varsity is Mark Reeder. The varsity assistant coaches are: Gabriel Scalise, Dan Wheeler, and Dan Fox. 

 

The JV head coach is JR Hall and assistant is Alan Sachs. Freshman head coach is Brian Kingery and the assistant is Mason Young.

Boys Volleyball

The freshman team has 2 wins and 6 losses, JV has 6 wins, 10 losses, 2 ties , and varsity has 4 wins, 10 losses, 1 tie.

The head coach is Veronica Kirkpatrick. The varsity assistant is Cori Breen and Stacie Finley. JV head coach is Andrew Weddle.

Our Goal

Your donation will support the student journalists of Liberty High School. For the upcoming 2025-26 school year, we are trying to purchase additional cameras and video equipment for our growing media program. We also plan to attend the national journalism conference in Nashville in November.

Emma Nolan
Emma Nolan, Reporter
Emma Nolan is a senior and this is her first year in publications. She does high school swim and is part of the Link crew. Emma does year-round swim and works at Barron swim school where she teaches kids how to swim. In her free time she likes to do things outdoors like hiking, biking and camping and loves to hang with friends. After high school she would like to go to college to study psychology and marine biology and she hopes to become a marine mammal trainer.

MaryKate Stroud is a sophomore, and this is her first time in publications. MaryKate is one of the  managers for girls Varsity Basketball. MaryKate is also the President Elect for FCCLA. MaryKate enjoys doing sports photography and traveling. MaryKate’s favorite place that she traveled to was Italy in the summer of ´24. MaryKate plans on going to college after high school and is currently indecisive on where she wants to go, but she knows that she wants to go for broadcasting and human resources. 
Kirsten Pinkham
Kirsten Pinkham, Reporter
Kirsten Pinkham is a freshman in her first year of publications. She plans on continuing with publications and joining the yearbook staff next year. In her free time she loves to read, bake, hang out with friends, watch sports games, and listen to music. She is looking forward to joining Key Club and other clubs in the future.  She loves sports photography and hopes to become a photographer/social media manager for the NHL.
