With all the noise in the world, it’s important to focus on things that can root us in our humanity, to take the edge off and really put things in perspective. One thing more and more students are finding this solace in is music, especially in Liberty’s many quickly-growing choirs.
There are currently five choirs that you can be involved in, based on your voice type and range: Baritone, Concert, Treble, Select Treble, and Chamber Choir. Under the direction of two-time SLHSMTA award-winner Carter Datz, the choirs have expanded from three choirs to the current standing of five, with the additions last year being Baritone Chorus and Treble Chorus. Select Treble and Chamber Choir are the only two auditioned choirs, meaning you must try out to take those classes.
“Our Select Treble (Choir) is a lot bigger than it was last year, there’s so many more freshmen and new people, and it’s so much fun to make new friends,” singer Riley Couch (10) exclaimed. “The concerts are so fun and it’s always a great time.”
Another aspect of choir at Liberty, besides learning to sing and read music, includes preparing for the four mass choir concerts: Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Spring Concert and Pop Concert. Most music selected for these concerts are seasonally themed, for example Holiday songs in the Winter Concert. Near the end of the school year, Mr. Datz announces a pop-culture inspired theme for Pop Concert, where students of all choirs collaborate to make choreography and come up with costume ideas for each song or medley based on the theme.
“My favorite concert of the year is the Winter Concert,” Ellie Force (11) from Chamber Choir said. “We get to sing really pretty Christmas songs and songs that just make us smile.”
If you’re interested in joining choir, students can contact Carter Datz for more information.
“I would tell anyone interested to join right away, you never know what’s gonna happen. It’s a fun way to meet new people and find new hobbies. Our choir is one big family, and it’s really fun to be a part of,” Force says.
