The safety of students is the top priority for WSD schools, but recent incidents involving e-bikes have raised concerns.
According to an email sent to parents and staff on Oct. 3, “we’ve seen an increase in the use of electric bikes, motorbikes, and similar vehicles on our campuses before and after school.”
Unfortunately, some students have been operating them at high speeds and in unsafe ways, putting both themselves and others at risk.
The email also reminded families to “remind your student to use safe transportation methods and to be mindful of others in parking lots and near our buildings and fields,” from the email sent.
Not only are the bikes a safety concern, but they are also destroying school property.
“Doing donuts with their motorcycles on our field,” athletics and activities director Cary Eldredge said.
While mini bikes are technically legal if under 50cc, it does not excuse destructive and dangerous behavior.
However, for some students this is their means of transportation to and from school.
“I think kids should be able to ride them to school, but like on the sidewalk,” Ben Smith-Moreland (10) said.
E-bikes and motorbikes can be a safe and effective way to get to and from school, however, if people can not do so safely it becomes an issue.
The incidents have occurred recently, and the school is asking for the partnership of families to help maintain a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. The school reminds everyone that school policies apply when on school property.
