Being an upperclassman in a sport doesn’t mean you have to help the underclassmen, but for Sophia Gamm, it’s different. She takes time out of her practice and personal time to support the Liberty tennis team.
“As a senior, I try to help younger players feel welcome and comfortable on the team. I also strive to lead by example by staying positive and supporting my teammates,” Gamm said.
Many people can handle pressure, but Gamm explains how she manages the intense moments in tennis, especially during tie breaks and deuce situations.
“I try to stay calm and focus on one point at a time. I take a deep breath, slow down, and remind myself to have good footwork and make consistent shots. Focusing on the next point instead of the score helps me stay composed,” Gamm said.
Since her freshman year, Gamm has noticed that all team members who keep coming back grow in confidence with their games.
“Since my freshman year, we’ve had a lot of new players join, but I’ve always felt like everyone is confident in their game.” she said.
Gamm also had people who supported her through tough times in high school, like her coaches, family, and friends. They helped her balance her grades, personal life, and sports. “
My coaches and teammates were really supportive when things got stressful. They always reminded me to stay focused and keep a positive mindset, and eventually, I would get through it,” Gamm said.
Being a part of the Liberty girls tennis team has meant a lot to Gamm. It has given her experience and confidence in everything she does. “Being on the Liberty girls tennis team has taught me teamwork and perseverance and brought me great friendships and memories I will always cherish,” she mentioned.
In the end, Gamm didn’t just gain friends; she found a family within her high school sport.
Her friend Olivia Washburn (11) shared what she loves about Sophia.
“I love how Sophie can always make jokes and have fun. Her laughter spreads to the whole team every time,” Washburn said. “She’s a great friend during tennis and outside of tennis too.”
