In this last 2017-18 school year, the Wentzville School District made the decision to opt out of the national school lunch program. The district choose this decision due to almost $83,000 worth of food going to waste.

Opting out of the national school lunch program gives students more appetizing food options such as mac and cheese and chicken strips. This change will hopefully make more students buy lunch and to help decrease the amount of wasted food.

“I think they lost so much money from wasted food because it looked so unappetizing,” senior Tiffany Galvez said.

This change was put into effect at the beginning of this school year and so far the amount of students purchasing lunch has visibly increased.

“The food we now have has different recipes with different ingredients that make them taste better,” sophomore Cynthia Jimenez said. “They also give us more options to choose from everyday of the week.”

Those who bought lunch to school the previous years have made an effort to buy lunch from the new menu.

“I’ve been buying lunch a lot more this year opposed to bringing it like last year, because the new food tastes better,” sophomore Brianna Mills said. “Last year even if they gave the students healthy oppositions they will still go for the unhealthy choices.”

Changing can be hard and difficult, however, this change looks like it’s headed in a great direction for students and staff.
