FCCLA had impressive results from competing at regionals in Montgomery City on Jan. 24, ending with five gold and three silver medals. Emma Thomas, Katelyn Larson, Paige Quinn, Violet Grau and Micaela Garcia all won gold. Mitchell Luker and Sara Reth both took home silver.

The event they competed in was called STAR, meaning “Students Taking Action with Recognition.” The students can pick any category and compete. It consisted of any class that was a FACS class but with the competitive element of making it a regional competition.

Liberty’s categories were “community service,” “focus on children,” “interpersonal communication,” and “promote and publicize FCCLA.” Once the students picked the category based on their project, they created presentation boards and speeches to present to the judges. Many students had to present a 10-minute speech.

Liberty has three groups that made it to the state competition. Our stars include Emma Thomas, Katelyn Larson, and Paige Quinn who competed in the topic “focus on children.” Liberty also had the “interpersonal communications” group move on to state, which was Violet Grau and Micaela Garcia.

All the schools in our region of the state of Missouri were competing against each other. This year there was a lower turnout than previous years because of Covid.

Thomas joined the club last year because she thought it would be a good way to make new friends. She also just really liked FACs, but could never take a FACs class because of the scheduling.

“I’m a part of FCCLA because I wanted a way to help the community that was connected to school time,” Luker said. “It was a lot easier for me to commit to meetings and stuff.”

Quinn mentioned that being a part of FCCLA had taught her teamwork. Thomas wants to use what she learned in FCCLA to start a crochet club. Luker now knows how to interact with the community and make community efforts.

Many FCCLA members mentioned that they planned on staying on the team and looked forward to competing again next year. Those who won gold will go on to compete at the state competition in March 2022.
