Sydney Davis, Editor-in-Chief of The 2024 Talon

Sydney Davis is an editor-in-chief of the Talon Yearbook and will soon be in her third year of publications while also a manager of the cross country team. She is in her senior year and her second year of classes at SCC. She loves listening to music and watching movies and reading in her free time, along with playing with her niece and nephews. Sydney dreams of being a concert photographer while traveling the world when she is older. She is unsure of where her education will continue after high school, but would like to major in either journalism or marketing. Worms love worms!

Then freshman, now sophomore Jaylen Mack jumps into the sand pit at Liberty’s Freshman Invitational held at Liberty (Wentzville) High School on April 26. Though Mack usually sprints the 4x200 and the 4x100, he has tried his hand at long jump and reached a distance of 4.98 meters at this meet. “Despite all the victories and achievements, it’s important to remain humble,” Mack said. I barely recall this meet, yet I still ended up with an incredible photo by the end of it that won me 3rd place for MIJA's April Photo of the Month.

Then senior, now alumni Morgan Struttmann (#13) settles the ball in the air on Monday, March 20, 2023, during the Liberty High School’s home opener against the Francis Howell Vikings in Lake St. Louis, Mo. “Morgan has grown into a big leader for our program,” Liberty head coach Heidi Kleekamp said. “She’s hungry for goals, she’s our leading goal scorer.” While Liberty came up short in the game with a 3-1 defeat, this match was very important as it served to honor the memory of sophomore and soccer player Lydia Elking, who passed away earlier this year.

(Then) senior boys from various club backgrounds compete to win Mr. LHS. Nolan Walch (far left) was later crowned winner. This was such a funny production, and I highly recommend watching it from the front row.

Then senior, now alumni Anna Wright, acting as Alice Murphy in "Bright Star," fights (now) senior Alijah Riles, playing Mr. Murphy, for her baby. I sobbed taking these photos as it was my first full run through of the show and then paid to see every single performance since.

Then senior, now alumni Fiona Do, competes in the 50 fly in the 200 relay race against Fort Zumwalt West and Washington. I recall this meet being fun to take photos at because I stayed mostly dry and everyone was super sweet to me.

Senior Lily Nelson hugs her mom with flowers in her hand as she is honored on Volleyball Senior Night. This event was held before the match occured, of which resulted in a win. I love this photo so much because of the pure happiness Nelson was emitting, made me smile even though I was tucked behind a camera most of the night.

Senior Brad Nonaka cheers for psychology teacher Mr. Barker as he puts his best disco-dance moves out on the gymnasium floor. Barker was then crowned the winner of the lip-synch competition due to his wonderful moves/singing. Nonaka cheering was just a wonderful moment I was very happy to capture as it was one of those pictures I hadn't even noticed taking in the moment and only later realized.

Senior Brady Freeman (#7) attempts to catch the ball on the inner arch of his foot and gain control of it, aiming his pass toward senior Canon Mathison (#9) during the game against Fort Zumwalt East High School on Oct. 17. Despite Liberty taking a 3-1 loss, the team celebrated 11 seniors on the night. The celebration began an hour before the game at 5 p.m. with the seniors walking the track being applauded and given gift bags. Soccer is one of my favorite sports to shoot, I am forever grateful that I caught this amazing moment on camera.

Sophia Metheney (12) hits a toe touch in a basket toss. Metheney loves to be tossed up high into the air during games as it gives her more time to hit the pose while flying. “My mom is always a hard-worker and I think that it has made me a hard-worker,” Metheney said. Another one of my all-time favorite photos and the crispness of the image is beautiful.

Senior Kyle Webb pulls back bits of the shark he is dissecting looking at it's inner organs in Mr. Kling's class. Others in Kling's Zoology class were far less interested in dissecting a shark. This was such a weird experience, taking photos of people poking and prodding inside of a shark's corpse for an assignment. I am unsure whether or not I would like to re-experience this again.

Mizzou's head football coach, Eli Drinkwitz, is swamped by all grades asking for photos. Drinkwitz landed via helicopter to scout Liberty's football players. This was such a memorable moment as I had never seen so many stressed administrators trying to corral children ages 7-18 begging for photos.

Freshman Grace Reinhardt watches the Kahoot playing on screen award the winners their points. I remember walking into this class and getting photos only to hear the most contagious laughs coming from the students so early in the morning.

Freshman Caleb Orcutt jumps and cheers wildey with his teammates during the game against Roosevelt. Another amazing win for the Eagles as they claimed a final score of 41-8, the Friday night before the homecoming dance. I love it when players cheer for each other on the sideline, it is the most loving and supportive thing I've ever seen in high school sports.

Junior Emily May practices the Belle's homecoming assembly's routine before all of the students watch the official performance. I love halftime performances and the Belles always kill it, always a beautifully choreographed routine performed.

Junior Jack Ryan (#23) chases Fort Zumwalt South Bulldog (#2), attempting to tackle and gain possession of the ball. The theme of this game was pink-out, hence Ryan's pink tape and gloves. This photo is so clear and it is cool how you can follow Ryan's eyes to the player running from him.

Senior Drew Smith, powderpuff coach, dances to Aqua's 'Barbie Girl' during the senior boy's halftime routine. Hair flipping and arm switch-swinging, he proudly performs his solo. This is one of my favorite photos of all time because I remember this halftime dance being quite funny, so the camera went down and I enjoyed it thoroughly, only to put it back up and catch this speedy move through the viewfinder.

Senior Aidan King (#94) takes hold of a Fort Zumwalt South Bulldog in a game held on Sept. 29. This photo has so much emotion held behind, with tension still rising as the game was nearing its end. The Bulldogs were within 1 point, trailing 34-33 late in the fourth and decided to go for a two-point coversion for the win. However, they were stopped by the Eagles' defense and they prevailed 34-33.

Senior Marquis Williams (#8) holds the face mask of Fort Zumwalt South senior Chase Bensing (#5). The Eagles won over the Bulldogs, 34-33. The pink-out football game was held to raise money for breast cancer awareness through quarterly miracle minutes. This photo stood out to me, despite its lack of complete clarity, the strong grab Williams had on Bensing was nothing short of impressive.

Senior girls dress in matching pink shirts loop arms and chant together, excited to play flag football against the junior girls. Seniors won on Liberty's home field, for the first time in school history. The blinding joy the seniors and their coaches brough to powderpuff flag football had me excited, even as someone on the sideline.

Senior Brianna Rowland winds back to throw a pitch, hair swinging upward. The game was held on Sept. 28 against Fort Zumwalt East, Eagles taking the win and celebrating the senior girls. Even with a broken camera lens, I was able to shoot the whole game and ended up loving this shot, despite the fuzziness.

Junior Dylan Handlan gains control of the puck while the referee watches from behind. The game was held on Sept. 26 against Francis Howell Central, with the Eagles taking the win. For my first time ever shooting hockey, I had a lot of fun so high up in the booth, above the penalty box and in between the teams. Did you know you can fit more than 4 players into a penalty box at once?

Seniors Alyse Gorman and Jordan Schwent dance together down the row, lined with fellow StuCo members. Disco songs played in the background as the two danced in Liberty's 11th annual Homecoming assembly, held on Sept. 14. This photo shares the joy StuCo members had, when performing their prepared routines for the entire student body to enjoy.

This meeting was held Oct. 19, at Peine Ridge Elementary and lasted nearly five hours. The school board and Dr. Tormala met in an emergency meeting on April 11 when it was determined that she will take an immediate sabbatical and retire from the district by the end of the year.
