The theater program at Liberty has easily become well-loved. This is due to the hard work and dedication of Mrs. Gehrke, the head of the program, and all of the students who pour their heart and soul into the productions. Last year, they opened the year with a heart-stopping production of “Trap” by Stephen Gregg, but this year, they’ll be taking a sharp turn from horror and diving into comedy with “Suite Surrender” by Michael McKeever.
Led with a cast of theater veterans and newbies alike, “Suite Surrender” will be a 1940s throwback, with a charming cast all trying desperately to throw a successful benefit while keeping the leading ladies as far from each other as possible. The show will take place Nov. 13-15 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
Mak Barnes (12), who also starred in “Trap,” will be starring as Claudia McFadden, one of the prima donnas, and Marley Higlen (11), who starred in the production’s showing of “Hadestown,” will play her opposite. Accompanied by only six other cast members in total.
“It’s a smaller cast than we’re used to,” Mrs. Gehrke said. “But we’re still going all out.”
Every theater kid can attest that there is no less effort going into this show. Aidan Cleary (12), one of only four understudies, says; “You’d think a comedy would be less work. But it’s actually worse. You can do a horror and only be kinda scary, but you can’t do a comedy and only be kinda funny.”
So, naturally, the theater program will have to put in everything. Between cotton candy sales and tech week, our theater program is certain to deliver another heart-stopping show, only now they’ll hope for smiles instead of screams.
