Every March and November the country descends into chaos, and not chaos of fighting physically or people going insane. It is the chaos of people and the debate over daylight savings. There are two and only two states that do not have daylight savings – Arizona and Hawaii. There are growing interests in recent years that have caused the debate of ending daylight savings.
Some reasons why there are people who support daylight saving time is because people enjoy more sunlight after work or school for outdoor activities, sports, and social events. Businesses like restaurants, retail stores and shops, and tourist attractions often benefit from people staying out later. Some people also take it as a way to save electricity by reducing the need for lighting in the evening. Even though the recent research shows that the savings are inconsistent, the idea still is appealing to many people. Public safety and crime is another reason behind daylight savings that are appealing to people because of the less crimes that can be committed. Â
Daylight savings ended on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 a.m. It begins again on March 8, 2026.
ELA teacher Brandi Goforth doesn’t like daylight savings time switching in both the winter and spring.
“We need to stay on a standard time, all the time and quit switching back and forth in the different seasons,” Goforth said. She is one that is all for removing daylight savings time.Â
Mr. Jacob Cole also doesn’t like daylight savings time. Cole’s feelings for daylight savings were as expected.
“It’s an archaic system that makes the winter time very depressing and dark,” Cole said. Cole is also onboard with eliminating daylight savings time.
“I would be down with making it a standard time, it’s 7 to 7 sun up to sun down,” he said.Â
There are other people who oppose daylight saving time because of the situation of sleep distribution and health benefits and issues. It is a split between the sleep distribution because in the winter the clocks go back and many people like that because they get an extra hour of sleep, but in the spring the clocks go forward and we lose an hour of sleep and that ticks many people off. The inconvenience of daylight savings can throw people off and can cause schedule changes, plans to not follow through and daily routines can be shifted or thrown off.Â
