Outdoor Pursuits is a class that prepares students for all things relating to the outdoors. The class includes two different levels, I and II. Within these classes, students learn many skills including outdoorsmanship, hunting techniques, archery, and more. These lessons prepare students for the future regarding outdoor interests.
Recently, Outdoor Pursuits I learned fishing skills in preparation for their annual field trip to Busch Wildlife. During their training, students learned about how to cast fishing rods, tie fishing knots, bait a hook, and the overall proper techniques of fishing to maximize their success. They also went in depth to learn about external anatomy of fish and the components of a fishing rod.
Their annual field trip took place on Oct. 27-28. After getting off the bus, students were able to go onto the lake and put their skills to the test. They packed all of their gear and necessities into their boat to make their trip as trouble-free as possible. This gave them an opportunity to be independent and have hands-on experience with fishing.
Kalynn Nielsen (9) has enjoyed fishing in the past and was looking forward to using her skills on the field trip to Busch Wildlife. She believes that fishing can help her in case of emergencies in the future.
Overall, fishing has shown to be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences to everyone.Â
“It’s an opportunity to be outside, to be in nature…it’s just a way to enjoy creation,” Outdoor Pursuits teacher Mr. Sodemann said.
By connecting with nature and learning real life skills, Outdoor Pursuits presents a form of interest for everyone. And when it comes to fishing, the skills involved are sure to leave people impressed.
