More students are starting to speak up about teachers using AI tools to grade or create assignments, and many, including myself, say it doesn’t feel right. When teachers tell students not to use AI but then use it themselves, it comes off as hypocritical and sets a bad example about what real learning should look like. It also doesn’t feel very professional, especially when AI can make mistakes or misunderstand student work because of a simple misunderstanding, it is just artificial intelligence after all.
When asked how the use of AI in the classroom was brought up, some students shared their opinions.
“It’s hard to trust a teacher when they use AI to grade, it just seems like they don’t care,” Ariana Gomez (10) said.
“I put so much work into things just to have it graded by AI, it’s honestly lazy,” Esther Freddy (10) said.
When feedback feels robotic or confusing, it makes learning harder instead of helping. The problem of teachers is becoming too dependent on technology. If teachers rely on AI to do their work, students can feel like they’re not getting real support or real teaching. It can make the classroom feel less personal and more like a machine is running things instead of a human who understands their needs.
There are also real questions about ethics in AI, especially when it’s used to judge student work. Many students just want teachers to take the time to read their assignments themselves. AI can be a tool, but it shouldn’t replace the effort that students expect from the people teaching them.
