Usually at the start of new school year as students we tend to notice more new stricter enforced rules. Most of the time it’s the talk of the school for weeks like the state law about phones. Although students may think that the more rules we have, especially with lunch, the worse the school year will be, but sometimes we need to stop and think about why these rules exist and if we didn’t have them, how lunch would start to look and sound.
Around lunch time on the bleachers, Liberty has staff to watch around on the bleachers to make sure no trouble is occurring and no food is being thrown around.
According to science teacher Zachary Kling, who serves as a all monitor for his lunch supervision, during lunch time he “normally has to only remind two or three people not to eat, but usually it’s the same three people. I do think the majority of students understand the rule not to eat. I just don’t think they care.”
Mr. Kling has been a monitor for three years. He takes the rule seriously because he knows when parents come to watch their children play in extracurricular activities at the school like basketball or volleyball, the parents sit on the bleachers. When the bleachers get dirty from lunch, that gives the school a bad look on their cleanliness and their students’ respect and behavior for the rules, which is why he enforces it so heavily.
Many students don’t understand the importance of this rule. Carter Renfro (9) feels like people should be able to eat on the bleachers. He said that students should be able to eat on the bleachers because “they want to watch everyone playing basketball, but still want time to eat their lunch and snacks.” Yes, this is a valid reason, but Liberty offers many other seating choices for students during lunch time so there is not any excuse as to why they can’t eat out of the gym quickly then go in there.
Overall, it is important not only for Liberty’s students, but also staff to take care of this rule. Liberty High School is one community that all students come together to represent the school in the best ways possible, but when there are conflicts like this, students need to stop and think why these rules are so serious and how it will reflect onto liberties imagine and the way its represented.
