Ski Mountaineering, also known as Skimo for short, is a new addition to the winter olympics. Ski Mountaineering brings out the slow and careful climb to a peak of a mountain, then a race all the way to the bottom. Ski Mountaineering brings disciplines like Sprint, Mixed Relay, Individual, Vertical, and Team. Ski Mountaineering sprint is a mix of an ascent portion, and then race portion, the athletes try to finish the course as quickly as they can through vastly different parts of the connected Skimo track. Then there is Mixed Relay, where three to four Skimo athletes race to complete circuits around the Skimo track. Then there’s Individual, Individual consists of one racer needing to complete three ascents and three descents to complete a full race. Next is Vertical, where the Skimo athletes race to climb to the top of the summit as fast as possible. Lastly there is Team, which is similar to individual but longer and each member has to be within 30 seconds of each team member. The medal count is quite close in Skimo, France is leading the way with one of each medal with a total of 3, Switzerland in second just behind with one gold, and silver medal. While Spain is in third with a total of three but without a silver to their name.
