Following the Missouri statute RSMO § 137.1120, in which a property tax credit program was introduced to freeze property tax liability for eligible taxpayers, the St. Charles County is introducing Proposition RT.
Prop RT, if passed, would place a cap on local property tax revenue. Residential property taxes would be frozen at the amount they were in the year 2024, attempting to provide relief to homeowners in the county. Around 73,000 property owners would see a decrease in their taxes, adding up to $15 million annually.
As a trade-off, the Wentzville school district superintendent Brian Bishop stated the district is expected to lose $10 million in revenue annually within five years. Other St. Charles County school districts, libraries, and fire and ambulance districts have voiced concerns over funding, as 97% of residents’ property tax goes to these institutions.
