In the past few months, choir students have once again been putting in their minutes for another annual event: Vocal Solo and Small Ensemble; an event where students have the ability to show off their singing skills. It starts off at the District contest, this year hosted at Fort Zumwalt East on March 7. Students of the Select Treble and Chamber Choir may enter with a solo, trio, quartet, or double quartet to be evaluated by a judge. This year, LHS choirs are taking 28 different events, each event singing two separate musical pieces.
Rehearsals have been happening weekly for each event for the past months.
“My rehearsal process has consisted of practicing rhythms, pitches, tempo, dynamics, and the memorization of all my songs with my groups,” Brynn Galliher (11) said. “We try to meet a couple times a week to make sure we’re prepared to be our best at competition.”
For the month of February, throughout all free times during the school day (such as Nest and Soar times), the practice rooms in the 500 hallway are practically always full of students putting their best foot forward for districts. For some, this process dates back to their freshman year.
“I’ve done it my freshman and junior year,” Alex Emberton (12) said. “It’s a lot of fun for all of us to just go to a school for a day, hang out, and watch each other perform.”
If students receive an “Exemplary” from an adjudicator on their performance, they also receive an automatic invitation to perform the same pieces at State in May.
“I wanted to sign up for the chance to work with more difficult music in groups of people and have the chance to make State. I’m really excited for the competition and hopefully making it to State,” Galliher said.
