The acclaimed British rock band Coldplay announced on Thursday, April 29 that they will be releasing a new song called “Higher Power” on Friday, May 7. The single was produced by Max Martin, one of the most prominent record producers in the world currently.

Many Coldplay fans, like myself, have long awaited for new music by the band to be released ever since their last album, Everyday Life, in 2019. The group posted on social media: “Higher Power is a song that arrived on a little keyboard and a bathroom sink at the start of 2020. It was produced by Max Martin who is a true wonder of the universe. It’s out on Friday 7 May. Love c, g, w & j.”

Fans have been speculating about the release of new music due to billboards and social media posts by the band containing a link to a website called “alienradio.fm.” Followers of the band deciphered the cryptic, letter-like symbols on the website to reveal the song’s title and release date.

Many people are excited that “Higher Power” will be the lead single of a new album yet to come. This is an ineffably huge event for the Coldplay community.

Coldplay is an especially unique band in that they have remained relevant for over 20 years. It all started when the members—Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion—met at college and formed the band in 1996. They released their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000, with songs including “Yellow” and “Trouble.” It was a commercial and critical success. It has since been certified Double Platinum in the United States. They then went on to release their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, in 2002, which included the songs “The Scientist” and “Clocks.” This was also a tremendous success. It has gone 4x Platinum in the United States.

Since then, Coldplay have released six more albums: X&Y (“Fix You” and “Speed of Sound”), Viva la Vida (“Viva la Vida” and “Violet Hill”), Mylo Xyloto (“Paradise” and “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall”), Ghost Stories (“A Sky Full of Stars” and “Magic”), A Head Full of Dreams (“Adventure of a Lifetime”), and the aforementioned Everyday Life (“Orphans”). All of these have been at least somewhat of a success.

This band has truly proven just how amazing and innovative they are for the past 21 years. They have continued to make great music, and it looks like they will keep doing so. That is exactly why so many fans are looking forward to “Higher Power” and its likely subsequent album. I know that there are countless Coldplay fans excited for this, and I am certainly one of them.
