In school, sometimes you are writing on paper and sometimes you are typing on a computer. So I asked some people which one they preferred.
In many instances, you don’t have a choice if you can write or type whereas some teachers give you the option if you want to type or write.
Some people like typing because it is more efficient and faster and you don’t have to worry about spelling because the computer does it for you. Whereas other students prefer writing because it helps you learn better by actually writing it down. Statistics show that writing helps you learn better and helps you with remembering the concepts. But most students still prefer typing on a computer. Why is that?
According to medical certs, the biggest advantage of typing is the faster you can type the more information you can record from a lecture. Writing your notes can cause your notes to be hard to read if you have to write fast and it can be slower for some people to write words out rather than typing them out for most people.
Olivia Flynn (10) prefers to type on a computer because she feels she is better at it and faster at it.
“The majority of teachers give her an option except for one teacher because their notes are on paper,” Flynn said.
There have been studies that showed that students who write their notes on paper lean more than those who type their notes out according to the National Institute of Health.
Caitlin McDonnell (12) prefers to write on paper because she likes the way writing feels and she is faster at writing than typing.
Most of the time her teachers give her an option and she is very thankful for that because she would find it more difficult if she had to type.
McDonnell talks about how when the teacher gives her options she notices how most people have their Chromebooks out rather than a paper and pen.
“I think that writing helps me learn better,” McDonnell said. “It helps me understand and retain the information better.”
Bradley Hudson (12) prefers to type on a computer because he can type faster and his handwriting isn’t that good.
“Most people give me a choice but sometimes it is one or the other,” Hudson said. “Sometimes kids prefer writing on paper and some like typing on computers and wish the teacher always gave a choice.”
We can’t say for sure if typing or writing is better but we can get a better idea of what people prefer when taking notes in school.
