The USC Ice bucket challenge has gained popularity across many social media platforms, and has now arrived at Liberty. This challenge was originally the ALS Ice bucket challenge, and was created in 2014 to raise awareness for amytophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
The new USC ice bucket challenge was created by Active Minds. This focuses on raising awareness for mental health. This challenge pushes youth to normalize mental health issues in everyday life.
This challenge, which first began at the University of South Carolina, is promoted on social media websites like Snapchat, Instagram, and Tiktok.
To be included in this challenge you have to be nominated by another person who also did this challenge. You are nominated to pour an ice bucket on your head, and you are given 24 hours to complete this challenge once nominated. Once you complete this challenge, you post it on social media, and typically you nominate about three other people.
This challenge helps to promote donations to Active Minds, to help normalize mental health issues in everyday life. One person at our school who participated in this challenge is Kaleigh Reitzner (10). She participated in this challenge because she believes that it helps to connect others, and it is a fun thing to participate in.
“I think the ice bucket challenge was for a good cause and really helped to boost mental health awareness,” Reitzner said.
Reitzner also nominated Jenna Means (10) to participate in this challenge as well. Means participated in this challenge because she thought it was for a good cause, and it was a fun thing to do.
“I like how it helps to spread awareness,” Means said.
Overall, the USC ice bucket challenge is a positive thing that is promoted on social media.
This challenge allows for an increase in mental health awareness in everyday life. Normalizing mental health helps to support people that struggle with these issues, and to make mental health a normal thing.
