Media and entertainment is everywhere nowadays. From the moment we wake up in the morning, our phones are often the first thing many people reach for. People are going to the movies more and more these days with friends, after what felt like a brief drop in moviegoers. The local Marcus Town Square Cinema has even reinstated a ticket-checker at the entrance, after having the position absent for years. One movie in particular has a lot of people in the media buzzing, and asking if a new era of entertainment has begun: David, by Angel Studios.
Angel Studios is a Christian-founded media company that is recently drawing more attention from the media. The studio is centered around faith-based and family friendly content, a genre that seems to have been missing in comparison to the sheer number of horror, drama, and PG-13 romance movies coming out. Their recent film, David, is a testament to their success, as the movie made around $70 million overall, and made $22 million opening weekend, a record for faith-based animation movies. The film tells the Biblical story of David, and how he fights the giant Goliath and fulfills his destiny according to God’s plan.
“I personally think a rise in Christian movies is good because it’s like Sunday school in a way, and that’s what people remember about the movies: the lessons,” Riley Couch (10) said. “It brings more attention to the faith.”
With compelling music primarily composed by Joseph Trapanese, and moral lessons not only based on faith in God, but on caring for others, pushing away jealousy, finding your purpose, and being humble, the movie seems to check all the boxes for the faith-based family to see and be inspired by. The animation is also very expressive and clear, comparable to that of Disney Animation Studios; you can see the light in the characters eyes, the drive behind each character’s actions and emotions.
With such success, and more movies planned to release in the upcoming year, such as “Solo Mio” (2026), Angel Studios seems to be truly making a name for itself in cinema entertainment as a Christian studio.
