Teachers are a chapter in a student’s life, but students are a teacher’s whole book.
Dr. Borders is an English teacher at Liberty whose love for teaching is abundant. Dr. Borders has been teaching for 30 years. She did take a five-year break from teaching though and was an assistant principal at Holt. She said she enjoyed it but missed being in the classroom with the students and building relationships so she was thrilled when the opportunity came for her to come back.
Students in Dr. Borders’ class say that she is a very kind and joyful teacher. Emma Range (9) said that she “always finds a way to relate to their projects.” This trait of hers helps students get to know her and makes them feel more comfortable in her class, rather than feeling like she is simply giving orders.
By creating a welcoming environment, Dr. Borders encourages students to express themselves and engage more deeply in their learning. Little things like this are what make a teacher stand out to students and leave a lasting impact long after the class has ended.
Dr. Borders said that “outside of the classroom she loves to go hiking and just loves to be able to get out in nature.” Most people don’t think about how teachers have lives outside of school, but these interests help shape who they are in the classroom. Her love for nature and taking time for herself reflects the joy and balance she brings into her teaching, allowing her to connect with students not just as a teacher, but as a person.
