Going above and beyond to help others, that’s what it means to be a support staffer. And on Feb. 12, Kurt Unger, a computer technician at Liberty, was honored for his outstanding efforts. Furthermore, he was honored by winning Support Staff of the Year, one of the most prestigious awards a staffer can win at LHS.
Mr. Unger explains how his job differs between students and staff.
“My job at LHS revolves around being the first tier of technical support for both our students and staff,” Unger said. “Typically on the student side, I work with Chromebook troubleshooting and repair. The CHIT lab helps a lot with this process, and I will sometimes work with them on more intricate repairs.”
It’s particularly significant that Mr. Unger won Support Staff of the Year since he’s only been working at LHS for almost seven months. But this has done nothing to downplay the amount of good work he has done and this only makes him feel all the more grateful to have won this award.
“It’s a great honor to be chosen for Support Staff of the Year, and I think everyone who was nominated deserves the same title,” Unger said. “It was a little shocking since I’ve worked in the district for just over one year, so support staff of the year is a very flattering achievement.”
Moreover, Mr. Unger has exceeded the expectation of what a support staffer is thought of to be and he indicates that he does this by simply communicating with others and reaching a common understanding.
Mr. Unger has also brought great qualities and values to the staff and made an overall positive impact on students. And Ms. Yamilka Jimenez, an English Language Arts teacher, further explained these qualities and the impact that Mr. Unger has made at LHS.
“Unger has brought values of dependability and helpfulness to LHS staff, and he’s a very hard – worker as well,” Jimenez said. “Students can also go to him at any time and he will help them.”
Additionally, not only has Mr. Unger has an impact on students, but he has set an example for the staff at LHS as well.
“Liberty is known for being one big family and he has supported all parts of that family,” Jimenez said.
