As the winter sports came and went, the spring sports are now in the spotlight. One of these sports is boys tennis. The players are very excited to start fresh with this new season, and can’t wait to get to their matches. They are all looking to improve and do the best that they can this year.
The girls had a great turnout and it’s looking good for the boys as well. According to Coach Campos, “there were over 54 girls that showed up for tryouts” and apart from a few quitting “48 made it and there were no cuts.”
The boys should have the same luck of no cuts but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still competition. They will have to prove through five rough days of conditioning and working their skills to fight for their spot if they want to be on varsity.
There are some veteran players that have been on varsity years prior along with some new freshmen who are supposed to be rather talented that have been playing for a good amount of time. Along with these athletes, there are also the players that were on JV last year who have no doubt improved with time. There are also a few people who haven’t played for a team before that have a new found love for the sport. With all these people – there are 34 people trying out – however there are only around 10 spots available.
Most everyone is looking forward to tryouts. One of these people is Daiwik Patel (10) he is most excited for the “connecting with other people,” part of tryouts. Patel is ready for the season even if that means beginning with a lot of conditioning.
Another player, Lucas Roth (10) is just as excited about tennis starting up again. His love for the sport comes from all “the fast-paced action and the quick games.” At first he didn’t know if the motivation was all there, but he said “because my neighbor is the coach, he encouraged me to play a lot.”
A lot happens the first few days of tryouts concerning conditioning, but not so much when it comes to tennis.
“The only tennis skills we really worked on was when we played king of the court,” Jacob Brooks (10) said. Although they did a few skill based drills like Tuesday when the team “worked on forehand hitting,” according to Brooks.
The team is looking to improve their 7-11 record from last year. Although that might be difficult for the team, their spirits are high.
Roth said “we lost a lot of varsity members from last year,” but hopefully the new players along with the returning players can up their skill levels so they can do better than last year.
