People still love seeing movies every year, but most fans have been waiting for years for the movies they want to watch. On average, movies would usually be delayed as short as 3 to 5 months, or for larger budgets 15 to 18 months. But now some of the most anticipated films have been pushed back over 3 years or been outright canceled. Are movies in danger?
One of the most notable delays was Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse, originally set to come out March 29, 2024. A year prior to the second installment, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. It came out shortly after Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse released that many of the animators have been overworked to achieve the level that was required. And there were many reports even from some of the main cast, stating that they haven’t even recorded lines. There was no possible way a movie could be fully animated, and had all of the cast record lines, and edit within a year. The movie was eventually pushed back over and over again, now sitting in a June 2027 slot (See more at the official Sony Pictures website https://www.sonypicturesanimation.com/projects/films/spider-man-beyond-spider-verse). The release marks almost 10 years since the first movie came out.
“Since the first one came out I’ve been a big fan of the movies and characters of the film, but it is sad to see how I was 13 years old and if the third movie even comes out when it’s scheduled I’ll be 17 years old,” said Isaiah Vidal (10). The delays could be credited to poor production and apparent need to rewrite the script, and to fulfill maximum box office revenue with the delay. Now, many fans wait for the day to finally come.
Even the highest grossing movies franchising aren’t safe from delays. Many films like The Avengers Doomsday, Shrek 5, and Fast and Furious. Many other big name movie franchises have been delayed six months to a year (https://screenrant.com/movie-franchises-skipping-2025-list/). With the release of the original Avatar in 2007, the major success of Avatar green light for a second film. But the movie making process did take its time, the original slot was 2013 but eventually Avatar the Way of Water released in 2023.
The third installment was meant to come out a year later, with two other movies following. But it was delayed a year to reorganize Disney’s calendar, and you’d have to think about the abundance of visual effects being used for each movie. Avatar Fire and Ash is now set for a late 2025 release (Trailer for Avatar Fire and Ash https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1757678/). The fourth and fifth installments are set for 2029, and 2031 respectively. Things like this take dedication, and teams of many people working together. But many movies aren’t lucky to have the backing of Disney. Underpaid, and overworked workers are a common cause of movies being delayed or canceled.
Production offices are many times the reason movies get delayed or canceled. Production offices are responsible through budgeting, organization, and possible work strikes.
“Production offices are so important because we are the backbone of a production,” said Madeline Francis, a 2023 graduate of Liberty High School, and now a student of Columbia College Chicago studying film. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the executive producer and the production manager. Each day on set production offices make sure everything gets done safely and smoothly.”
If even one of these many things happens, the entire production office will be put under pressure. Without money they can’t make the film, without organization how will they get anywhere productive. And recently we’ve seen lots of work strikes in the film industry. The most recent one was the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) actors strike, the strike was over disagreements of pay from work and the use of AI in Hollywood. The strike lasted four months before being resolved, this strike pushed many projects affecting their production and release dates.
Movies sometimes don’t even see the light of day, and are stuck in production for many years eventually being scrapped. Watchers have missed possible amazing films but with delays and further problems we might never be able to see them.
