In the winter of 2024, the film “Wicked” astonished won over audiences and became a huge success. With its emotional plot and immediately famed ending, it set a high criteria for movies that follow. This winter, the sequel “Wicked: For Good” released, and fans have mixed opinions.
While the overall cinematography and continued plot shook fans once again, the question still stands; does it beat the first “Wicked” movie? Some fans say that the newest release beats out the first by a long shot, while others favor the first movie – no questions asked. In case you’re wondering about the general opinion of movie lovers here at Liberty, here are some student opinions of the contrasting movies.
Margaret Hollensbe (9) saw the movie in theaters right when it was first released. She shares her ideas on each movie in comparison. “I generally liked the first movie – I feel like it just had more personality. But I like the plot of the second one more just because it was more well done, and they just tried to fit so much in the first one,” Holmes said.
From a similar perspective, Riley Couch (10) shares the common favor of the first movie. “I like the first one because I like the songs, and I enjoyed the storyline,” Couch said. “The second one is much more sad, and made me more emotional.” Couch observes the difference in the tone of each movie, favoriting the more lighthearted vibe of the first movie.
Likewise, Lauren Dobratz (10) also agrees with many when it comes to the two movies. She concurs “Oh, the first one for sure. The second one was okay, but the first was a lot more interesting. I felt like the second one was a lot more rushed, so I couldn’t really follow the plot.” Dobratz shares her thoughts in depth, mentioning the fast paced plot in the second movie, compared to the first.
Annabelle Mareschal (9) is another Wicked 1 fan. Similar to others, Annabelle enjoys the plot and idea of the first one better. But in specific, she notes that the characters were more enjoyable in the first movie. “Elphaba was way better, and Glinda was more accurate to the original play,” Mareschal said. Mareschal gets into the details of the characters rather than the generalized storyline. She appreciates the details in Elphaba and Glinda’s characters, and ends with her overall opinion, “I don’t cry in movies, but this movie was really emotional and it was really good.”
Going 4 for 4, it seems that “Wicked: For Good” has been voted out by a landslide. Although it is no question to these students that both are very entertaining movies, students prefer the cinematic experience, plot, and characters to the first movie. So the saying goes; nobody beats the original.
