Senior year is a whirlwind time for many students, and trying to get your A+ hours complete is often another complication for high school students in their final year. However, starting the process of getting your hours done before senior year may be the head start you need to get your hours in before you graduate.
The A+ program can be an important and crucial part of a student’s paths after high school. To qualify, you must have at least a 2.0 GPA, a cumulative 95% attendance, and at least 50 hours of volunteer work before May, 1. However, some seniors have found it difficult to keep up with the hour and attendance requirements.
Zachary Waltz (12) thinks the hardest part of A+ is finishing the hours.
“Especially if you’re in sports or something, the hardest part is getting those hours in around that,” Waltz said
Waltz feels like the options for what can be done for A+ hours is too limited.
“Really, you’re kind of limited. The only way to really get hours is by tutoring or going to an elementary school and tutoring there,” Waltz said.
Waltz sees the 95% attendance rate as one of the easier prerequisites for A+.
“You just show up. That’s the big thing,” Waltz said.
Noah Block (12) was a little worried about getting his hours done as he got a late start on his hours, but is still confident that he can get it done by the end of the year.
“It’s definitely harder to find time to get the hours done, especially since a lot of the opportunities for A+ are after school,” Block said.
Block, who is actively involved in theater, finds it challenging to make time for after school A+ tutoring, especially at the tail end of senior year. It can become a major headache with the A+ hour submission deadline for seniors being May 1, only mere days away.
