If you’ve ever strolled down the 200 hallway you probably saw an interesting looking handmade rooster statue that sits outside of Ms. Franke’s room. And like most people, you’re probably wondering how it got there and why it was made.
Ms. Franke did not hand make this rooster statute.
“I actually didn’t make the chicken. He was a gift from a group of students in 2018,” Franke said.
This isn’t the end of Roger’s hilarious back story.
One day Ms. Franke brought in a chicken to use as a hall pass as a joke. Her students thought it was funny and they started buying her chickens as a joke every time they saw one.
One of her students saw a chicken named Roger in a flea market for $150 and messaged all his friends and asked if they would put in to buy it for her. The students’ father worked at the school (Warrenton) where she taught at the time. One night he left it in her classroom.
“It means a lot to me when a student thinks of me outside of the school day,” Franke said. “I appreciate a thoughtful note, so the fact that this group of 20 students colluded to buy this for me and leave it in the dark of night for me to find was a definite tear jerker. Roger is a constant reminder that what I do at school does make a lasting impact for students.”
