The boys varsity soccer team finishes the GAC Divisional Cup strong with beating St. Charles 9-0 on Thursday. The Eagles were not able to make it to the main GAC cup this year, but they were able to win the Divisional Cup, giving them the confidence going into districts.
In the previous games of the this tournament, the Eagles played Warrenton on Oct. 7 (9-1), Francis Howell North on Oct. 9 (4-2), and North Point on Oct. 14 (4-0). This past Thursday they played St. Charles going in strong from all of these wins.
The JV boys were able to set the scene by winning 9-1 against St. Charles 30 minutes prior. The goals were made by Gavin Morak (10) with three goals, Jack Albertson (10) with three goals as well, James Good (10), Jack Clanton (11), and Reid Delaney (11). The JV boys were also able to end the game early with getting eight more goals than the other team.
The Eagles were not worried for this match, as they have beat St. Charles many times before.
In the first half the Eagles put a lot of pressure on the St. Charles players, which gave them them the advantage of always getting the ball from them.
In the first 20 seconds of the match, James Naphakorn (11) already scored a goal. After they reset and St. Charles did kick off, Naphakorn was able to get another goal in less than a minute into the game.
The Eagles were stoked that he was able to get two goals so easily and they were ready for the rest.
Brendan Lukunka (12) was also able to score a goal shortly after making the score 3-0.
While Jackson Rocco (12) plays defense, he was able to score a goal from the other side.
Corey Lynch (12) was waiting for his turn to score a goal so he made it happen, scoring two goals in a row making the score 6-0.
Lukunka was also able to score another goal. Coach Luedecke wanted to give other players a chance to score so he took Lukunka out of the game and put in Cannon Nord (12) as a striker. Nord usually plays defense so this was his first time playing up top this season.
Everyone on the team wanted Nord to score a goal so they all kept passing to him to give him the chance and he was able to score his first goal of the season. He was very excited with everyone watching him.
“I got my first goal of the season and it feels good,” Nord said.
This was the eighth goal of the game which in high school soccer if you get eight more points than the other team, then the game ends early. However, they do still need to play a full half so while Nord could have ended the game with 13 minutes left in the first half, they had to keep going.
Coach Luedecke wanted another one of our defensive players to go as striker so he took out Nord and put Rocco back in. Unfortunately, Rocco was not able to score a goal this time but he was still happy he scored one earlier.
“I played not too shabby, I got a goal and almost had a couple of assists and we had a clean sheet,” Rocco said.
Jonah Chisholm (9) was able to top it off at the end scoring a goal making the final score 9-0 without even playing the second half.
“We showed we were dominate by beating them in the first half,” Rocco said.
The Eagles play Rockwood Summit, one of the top schools for soccer on Oct. 21.
Then to end the season before districts the Eagles play Holt on Oct. 23 for senior night.
