The end of the season is coming sooner than expected for the wrestling team. This Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14, the girls wrestling team has districts at Francis Howell North. The following weekend, Feb. 20-21 the boys wrestling team has districts at Fort Zumwalt North. This is the final tournaments of the season other than state. If you get top four in your weight class, you go to state which will be held at Mizzou.
The girls head coach, Austin Cornell, has been preparing his wrestlers the best to his ability. He has been making them do conditioning every day and encouraging healthy eating and a good sleep schedule. He also has been working with his wrestlers on different techniques that he thinks will help them a ton. The boys’ head coach, Kevin Haynes, has been doing the same for his crew.
“I’m trying to fix my sleep schedule and cut out sugar to prepare for districts,” Sophia Spakowski (12) said.
Mental health is also very important to the wrestlers as they need confidence for their matches and beileve that they can win. The coaches have been encouraging putting sticky notes of everything they are good with wrestling wise, on their mirror to get that self-assurance.
“I’ve been looking and reading mental toughness books to get myself right and giving myself positive talk in the morning,” Alberto Malave (11) said.
This current team is a very strong contender for districts and has a lot of experienced seniors as well as people who have worked their way to the top in only their few years of wrestling.
“The whole team can go to state,” Maddoxx Jones (12) said.
The girls wrestling team is in class 2, district 2 (class 2 is the highest class for girls wrestling as of 2025-26 season) and there is a total of 20 schools in this district. As of the 2026-27 season girls wrestling in Missouri, will be adding another class, class 3 and Liberty will be moving to that higher class. The boys wrestling team is in class 4, district 2 and there is a total of 16 schools in this district.
This important tournament could be the last for some of our seniors, but will nonetheless be exciting for the entire team.
