Coach McMillen has lived by a certain rule when it comes to football: if you’re gonna be on the team, you’re gonna work.
“I’m going to coach them exactly how I coach the boys,” McMillen said. He takes work ethic deeply.
McMillen is the head coach for the new girls flag football club here at Liberty. Flag football is an emerging sport in Missouri and it’s beginning to gain popularity across many school districts. However, in the Wentzville School District, the sport must be recognized by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) before it can become a sanctioned school sport. Sometimes this takes 1-2 years after becoming a club to a sport.
For this year, flag football is a sport at the club level. They have 6 a.m. practices twice a week before school along with the lifting program McMillen put in place twice a week after school for the girls. The club has around 30 students.
States like Florida, California, New York, and our neighboring states Kansas, and Illinois have already adopted this as an official sport. Despite it still being in the beginning stage at Liberty, there is high optimism that the sport will be official in the next couple years.
As the new world of girls flag football continues to grow, the club has high hopes for large attendance and community at Liberty.
