Julieta Beltran (11) is from Colombia. An English as a second language student (ESL) at Liberty, she and her brother Samuel (10) moved here last year with their family. Julieta and Samuel have been learning, along with other students, with translation apps.
Liberty High School is working hard to accommodate ESL students and make learning easy and fun. One of the many ways that the teachers are trying to do this is by implementing in-time translation apps. This is a way that teachers and students can communicate with each other so everyone can get the learning experiences that they deserve.
One of Julieta’s classes is Algebra Foundations. This class is taught by Mrs. Whitmore and Mrs. Decker. The teachers have been working hard to make it as easy as possible for the students to learn.
“We’re also using Canva and Google to translate documents and stuff like that,” Whitmore said.
Whitmore also talked a little about the rest of the year.
“I think knowing that, like, me and (math teacher) Mrs. Lockwood are on the same team and were trying to work together to give each kid in our class the best education possible,” Whitmore said.
Many people might think learning through Google Translate would be difficult, but for Julieta Beltran, it’s the opposite.
“The truth is, I don’t think (it is hard) because with the help of the teachers everything becomes easier and we can understand better,” Julieta said.
Despite all of the challenges, students are still excited for the rest of the year.
“I think that as time goes by, we’ll be able to understand English a little better, and the classes will be easier,” Julieta said.
As the school year progresses, the collaborative spirit between the teachers and students continues to grow. Julieta and her classmates, with the support of their educators, are not just learning English but are having fun too. The future looks bright, filled with academic achievements and new experiences. This is all due to the effort of caring teachers, ready-to-learn students and a little bit of technology.
