On Saturday Sept. 27, the boys varsity soccer team went against St. Dominic for their final match in the St. Louis Champions Tournament at Francis Howell High School. Previously in this tournament, they went against Oakville (lost 2-1) and Francis Howell (tied 3-3). Unfortunately for the Eagles, they lost 2-1, which was last in their pool.
In the first half of the game, the Eagles did not score any goals. St. Dominic, however, was able to score two goals in the opening half to take a 2-0 lead.
Throughout the game there were many fouls and yellow cards. In the beginning of the second half, coach Luedecke got a yellow card for Brendan Lukunka (12) not wearing big enough shin guards.
While Lukunka was changing his shin guards, a few St. Dominic players noticed another one of the Eagles, Gavin Moyers (12), was not wearing big enough shin guards. Moyers was given a yellow card since coach Luedecke already got one.
While the Eagles were trying to attack, a St. Dominic player fouled in the box to give us a penalty kick. Corey Lynch (12) took the penalty kick and the Eagles scored to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Even though the Eagles weren’t able to win this tournament, they do believe they still have a chance at districts in a few weeks.
“I am not happy with the way things ended but I know we will bounce back for districts,” Jackson Rocco (12) said.
After the game ended, coach Luedecke and coach Pangan both critiqued the Eagles on what they could do better next game.
“We need to work on finishing our chances and not making small mistakes,” Rocco said.
“We definitely need to work on crosses and free kicks,” James Naphakorn (11) said.
Next week the Eagles play Timberland and are getting ready for districts in a few weeks.
