Alpine skiing consists of six main disciplines: Downhill, Giant Slalom, Super-G, Slalom, Parallel and Alpine Combined. The discipline of downhill skiing prioritizes fast speed instead of sharp controlled turns. In Downhill athletes can get up to speeds of around 70 miles per hour. Slalom and Giant slalom require precise movements and sharp turns. The only difference between Slalom and Giant Slalom is how tight the turns are, in slalom the turns are tighter leading to slower speeds. Super-G is the combination of both Downhill and Giant Slalom athletes reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour while making really sharp turns. Super-G is considered the hardest Alpine discipline because of this. Parallel is when two athletes race side by side on either Slalom or Giant Slalom gates. Alpine Combined is a team event where one teammate competes in Downhill and the other in Slalom. If one of the skiers does not finish then the team is disqualified. Switzerland had the most medals with nine total followed by Italy with five then the USA and Austria both with four.
