The much-anticipated annual Senior vs. Faculty Swofford Basketball Game is this Thursday. It promises an exciting showdown and a valuable opportunity to support educational aspirations. This beloved tradition serves as a key fundraiser for the Scott Swofford Memorial Scholarship, an initiative that provides two deserving seniors with a $1000 scholarship each. The game itself is set to be the centerpiece of a lively pep assembly, designed to bring together the entire school community for an afternoon of spirited competition and camaraderie.
Philip Luedecke, a faculty member and coach at Liberty, shared his excitement for the event.
“Always one of my favorite days of the year,” Luedecke said. “I love all the trash talk and competing with the seniors.”
Looking ahead to the game’s outcome, he confidently predicted a victory for the staff, stating, “Staff will win by 25 points.” This bold prediction adds an extra layer of anticipation to the matchup.
Chip Sodemann, who is the head coach for the boys basketball team and on the MSHSAA Advisory Committee, highlighted the significance of the event.
“It means a lot to be able to participate in an event that can help raise money for two scholarships,” Sodemann said.
Despite his enthusiasm for the cause, Sodemann offered a more reserved outlook on the student team’s chances against their faculty opponents. When asked about the possibility of a student victory, Sodemann straightforwardly replied, “No.” He further elaborated on the perceived difficulty of the task, adding, “I do not think that any of the players on the student team will be that tough.”
However, some of the students think differently “we’re 100% winning,” Clayton Johnson (12) said.
The pep assembly, featuring the Swofford Basketball Game, is scheduled for Thursday during NEST Time at the end of the day (the NEST and 6th hour schedule will flip that day), making it a perfect opportunity for students and staff to rally behind their respective teams and contribute to a meaningful cause that celebrates academic achievement and community spirit.
