Early Tuesday morning polling centers all around the country opened up for voters to cast their vote for their General Municipal Election. Many important positions are voted on during this election, including fire districts, aldermen, mayors, councilmembers, and school board of education candidates.
Liberty High School is one of the local polling locations for St. Charles County and was open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. for members of the community to cast their ballots on various important decisions.
After counting all of the votes, Brad Welsh and David A. Biesenthal won with a combined total of 56.8 percent of the votes, according to the St. Charles County Election Authority. Welsh earned the highest number of votes, with a total of 4,883 and Biesenthal came in a close second with a total of 4,872 votes.
The newly elected board members will be sworn into their positions during an upcoming Board of Education meeting, presumably during the board reorganization on April 16.
This is an increase from when they ran last year, as Welsh received 3,842 votes and Biesenthal received 3,982 votes but they both fell short of being elected.
The other candidates, Cindy Reidy and Leigh Palitzsch, received the other 42.99 percent of the votes. Reidy received 3,847 votes equating to roughly 22.41 percent of the votes, and Palitzsch received 3,533 votes, or 20.58 percent of the total ballots casted.
Along with that, there were a total of 30 write in votes, making up just 0.17 percent of the total votes.
Many people in the local community learned about two of the candidates through a live-streamed event held by LHS Publications known as Town Hall. This livestream invited all candidates to come and answer questions pulled from the community and generated by the research team.
