New president Donald Trump was sworn into office on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and said in his inaugural address “we will strive together to make his dream a reality. We will make his dream come true.”
Here is what happened at his inauguration.
The event was moved indoors due to the freezing temperatures outside Washington D.C. It caused many MAGA supporting citizens to be left outside but they say it was worth it.
Some notable people who attended are President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton with their spouses, former First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush also were present. Trump’s family and the Cabinet nominees were also there. Michelle Obama did not attend the ceremony.
The three richest people in the world Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg were present at Trump’s inauguration. A lot of other big tech CEOs attended. The CEO of Tiktok, Shou Zi Chew, was also sitting there with the other tech moguls.
Donald Trump has taken the Oath of Office, but chose not to put his hand on the Bible. However, it is not legally required to do so, as he is bound by the words he spoke as he took his oath.
JD Vance is now the 50th Vice President in the history of the United States. He took his oath right before President Trump with his family standing right beside him.
Trump signed a multitude of documents to officialize his take over of the office. His trusted circle watched him sign to appoint his cabinet members officially. He signed 31 acting and designations appointments to effectively take control of the government.
During his speech, Trump vowed that a new “golden age for America begins now.”
Here are five key takeaways:
Immigration: Trump will be sending troops to the southern border. He will also designate the Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. He says his first act as president will be to to declare a national emergency at the U.S. southern border.
Economy: Trump sees oil drills as the path to better energy prices, gas prices especially, and bringing back manufacturing jobs for the people. He also plans to tackle inflation, which includes grocery prices that relate directly to the consumers at the grocery store. He will turn America into a manufacturing nation by ending the Green New Deal and revoking the electric vehicle mandate.
Tariffs: Trump will create an External Revenue Service to collect the fees from foreign products brought here to the United States.
Diversity, Equity, and Exclusion (DEI): Trump wants to eliminate DEI, a social program. He declared that America will henceforth recognize that there are only two genders, male and female. He will sign an executive order to officialize it in the near future. He also envisions to forge a society that is color blind and merit based.
Renaming: He will rename Mount Denali to Mount McKinley after President William McKinley. It was previously Mount McKinley until President Obama renamed Mount Denali in 2015. “Where it should be and where it belongs,” Trump said. Trump will also be changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, but it doesn’t mean any other nations would recognize that the Gulf of Mexico’s name has changed.
Reclaiming: The Panama Canal, which had been gifted to Panama by President Teddy Roosevelt. Trump plans on taking back “the foolish gift that should have never been made.”
The orders he will implement could undo many of former President Joe Biden’s efforts to slow down greenhouse gas emissions, protect federal lands from oil drilling, and preserve the civil rights of transgender people.
Overall, the difference between his speech eight years ago and today is that Trump gives a very negative outlook with how policies need to be reversed. However, he also turns the page by offering his visions. He sees it that he has the mandate to implement his views.
Right after Trump’s inauguration, Elon Musk ran onto the stage and threw his arms around in bravado. “Yes! This is what victory feels like!” Musk said.
Many MAGA supporters were overjoyed by President Donald Trump’s return to office, saying that they’ve needed a change. Trump has survived two assassination attempts.
“I felt then and believe even more so now that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump said.
